Description

Want to help your students increase their conceptual knowledge in the mathematics content area? Word problems are a great way to help them do just that! Research states, time and again, that when students are challenged to apply conceptual knowledge, their understanding of those concepts increases. Especially when they are permitted to work collaboratively in structured, heterogeneous groups.

This 61 page product includes 38 weeks worth of daily word problems, a "how to use this product" page, an answer key for each of the 38 weeks, a teacher rubric tool, a student rubric tool, and additional student support tools.

The first 3 weeks are based upon grade 4 standards and will serve nicely as an additional review tool. The remaining 35 weeks are based upon almost all of the Grade 5 standards and include a mid-year review (please note that MANY more standards are covered than what is listed in the product description).

Each week clearly describes the concept that is being assessed to help making organizing and planning a little easier. I have also included the week number on each word problem so that you can easily find the solution for the problem in the answer key.

These problems are intended to be used with students who are working at grade level. However, I have found that when most of my students who are receiving special education supports work together in heterogeneous small groups, they are usually able to produce work that is comparable to their peers'. This leads to an increase in their confidence and their class participation.

This product is intended to be used in conjunction with a 3-subject notebook or two 1-subject notebooks (whichever you prefer). It is also complimented by my Problem Solving Process task card product.

Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘒/𝘣 + 𝘀/π˜₯ = (𝘒π˜₯ + 𝘣𝘀)/𝘣π˜₯.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
