In this check in, students will be finding the greatest common factor of two numbers. Students find it by listing all the prime factors of each number, noting all the prime factors that the two numbers have in common, and multiplying them if necessary. Consider the
numbers 42 and 90. What is their greatest common factor?
The prime factors of 42 are 2, 3, and 7. The prime factors of 90 are 2, 3, 3, and 5. The common factors (that appear in both numbers) are 2 and 3. 2 x 3 = 6. Therefore, 6 is the greatest common factor.
