This includes both a Google Sheets online worksheet and a printable PDF that your students can use to practice using percents to compare fractions in word problems. In these problems, students are looking at two different fractions from real-world situations. For example, let’s say 14 out of 37 reptiles at the Hampton Zoo are lizards. 22 out of 54 reptiles at the Hudson Zoo are lizards. Which zoo has a higher percentage of lizards?
14/37 22/54
Converting each fraction to a percent makes it easy. For the first fraction, we can set up the election 14/37 = X/100. Cross-multiply to create the equation 37X = 1400. Divide both sides by 37; X = 37.84%. For the second fraction, we can set up the election 22/54 = X/100. Cross-multiply to create the equation 54X = 2200. Divide both sides by 54; X = 40.74%.
22/54 is greater, or bigger. The Hudson Zoo has a higher percentage of lizards.
