Description
Use this worksheet, in either Google Sheets online form or printable PDF, to help your students practice how to work with opposite numbers and understand distance on a number line.
Opposite numbers appear on opposite sides of the number line and are the same distance from zero. For example. -5 and 5 both have a distance of 5 from zero. The distance from -5 to 5 is 5 x 2 or 10.
The worksheet includes 16 problems covering opposite numbers, distance of numbers to zero, distance between opposites, and converting positive to negative numbers through multiplying and dividing. You can convert 5 to -5 by subtracting 10 from it or adding -10 to it. You can also do so by multiplying it times -1 or dividing it by -1.
I include a page in this package that has sample number lines should you choose to have your students use them.
You can let the students try solving the worksheet problems on their own or lead them in one or more. They should do Grade 6 Rational Numbers Guided Notes; Opposite Numbers & Distance, Number Line before taking on the worksheet. After they have finished this worksheet, have them do Grade 6 Rational Numbers Check In 7 and Check In 8.
