Description
This is an update and a big improvement on a popular assignment. It's a simple, down to earth introduction to graphing equations on a grid.
Students start by completing the familiar input-output table, identifying the “rule” or pattern, and writing the equation represented in the problem (e.g., Y = 4 (X), or Y = 3X + 2). Students then use the table to locate points on the grid, and use the resulting line to solve problems which highlight the value of drawing a graph precisely.
There are a total of 8 problems, all different and all comprehensible to students. Most of the problems have a page on which students can complete the table, and another on which students draw and interpret the graph. The format is arranged so students can look at the problem/table page and the graph page simultaneously.
All graphs are in Quadrant 1, making this activity valuable for both 5th graders and middle schoolers reviewing coordinate graphing in preparation for studying functions and linear equations.
Detailed teaching notes are included.
Common Core Standards:
5.G.2: “Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate lane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.”
6.RP.3.a: “Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane…”
Level: Grades 5 - 7
Length/Duration: 14 pages of student work, 3 days
