Description

This resource, for Algebra through Pre-Calculus, covers graphing piecewise functions, evaluating piecewise functions from a graph and equation, writing piecewise functions equation from the graph, and piecewise function word problems. This scaffolded bundle includes 5 Warm Ups, a Hands On Lesson Notes Activity in which students cut and paste each piece of a piecewise function to better understand subdomains, a 9 question practice worksheet that includes different representations and various question formats, and a 5 question exit ticket. The color coded solution keys are included in this PDF bundle.

Warm Ups

Warm Up #1: 2 Piecewise Functions graphs with questions like "Describe any characteristics can you identify."

  • This would be a good "Intro" to a Piecewise Functions lesson

Warm Up #2: Identifying what's the same and what's different between 2 different Piecewise Functions graphs

Warm Up #3: Evaluating Piecewise Functions Graph

Warm Up #4: Evaluating Piecewise Function Equation including error analysis

Warm Up #5: Evaluating Piecewise Functions using 2 different equations

Lesson

The Hands On Lesson Notes include:

  • open circles vs. closed circles for endpoints
  • understanding sub-domains
  • graphing piecewise functions
  • evaluating piecewise functions from both a graph and equation
  • linear, constant, quadratic, and absolute value functions
  • continuous vs. discontinuous

Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If 𝘧 is a function and 𝘹 is an element of its domain, then 𝘧(𝘹) denotes the output of 𝘧 corresponding to the input 𝘹. The graph of 𝘧 is the graph of the equation 𝘺 = 𝘧(𝘹).
Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements that use function notation in terms of a context.
Graph square root, cube root, and piecewise-defined functions, including step functions and absolute value functions.
