Description

Empower your students as mathematicians with this discovery-based Graphing Exponential Functions Transformations Guided Discovery Math Activity!

Students investigate what the numbers in exponential functions represent by graphing functions with x-y tables, comparing transformed functions to the parent function, and analyzing patterns visually.

After making initial predictions about exponential transformations, students use the Desmos Graphing Calculator to test their theories, refine their thinking, and build deeper conceptual understanding. Finally, students apply their discoveries by describing transformations of exponential functions and writing exponential equations from transformed graphs.

I love using discovery-based activities in my classroom because students feel really proud of themselves after they get the chance to make their own connections with the material without me giving them all of the information. Watch your students' confidence soar as they experience one light bulb moment after another.

When students understand the “why” behind transformations of exponential functions, the “how” becomes so much easier!

Why will you and your students love this activity?

  • Engages every learner through hands-on exploration and inquiry-based learning.
  • Encourages critical thinking and conceptual understanding, not just memorization.
  • Builds strong connections between algebraic and graphical representations of exponential functions.
  • Works beautifully as a lesson introduction, reinforcement, or review before assessments.
  • Saves planning time with ready-to-use, editable pages that can be customized for any class.
  • Supports diverse learners by allowing students to explore at their own pace and verify their ideas visually with Desmos.

Your students will need to know the following skills prior to completing this activity:

  • Evaluating expressions with exponents
  • Creating an x, y chart from an equation
  • Using an x, y chart to plot ordered pairs and graph a function

With this activity, students will discover the following exponential transformations:

  • Horizontal shift (left and right)
  • Vertical shift (up and down)
  • Vertical stretch and shrink
  • Reflection over the x-axis (vertical reflection)

What’s included?

  • 5-page Guided Discovery Activity
  • Fully worked answer key
  • PDF + Editable PDF formats
