Three levels of difficulty are included for each math task.

The Grocery Store Goof Up

In this mystery, students will read a letter from Macy where she explains that she left her grocery list at home. Instead of going home, she's hoping they remember everything on the list so they can bake cookies when they get home. This mystery includes a grocery list of ingredients that they remembered. Macy needs the help of your students because she's still missing something from her list. Students will complete challenges to earn clues to help Macy!

Take a Peek Inside the Mystery:

  • Teacher Instructions: Suggestions for how to implement, set-up, differentiate, and an explanation for how to use the resource.
  • Skill Breakdown: A one-page document that shows what each level of each activity requires of students.
  • Letter and Case File Cover from Macy: Students will read the case file from Macy explaining what's happened and a student friendly explanation of what she needs their help to do.
  • The Grocery List: Students will receive a list of 5 ingredients they came to the grocery store to get. They will use this list along the way to help them solve the mystery.
  • The Tasks/Challenges: Students are provided with 5 different challenges. Each challenge has 3 levels of difficulty for you to choose from so you can differentiate for your students' needs. Below is an overview of each of the 5 activities.
  • Produce Picture Graph - Students will complete the picture graph given the data.
  • Grocery Cart Tally Chart - Students will look at the items in a grocery cart and complete a tally chart (and line plot for the third level).
  • Bakery Bar Graph - Students will look at the items at the bakery counter and complete the tally chart and bar graph.
  • Aisle Analysis - Students will answer questions based off the data presented in a bar graph.
  • Dessert Data - Students will collect data from their classmates and graph the results.

  • Case Report: Students will complete the case report when they have solved the mystery.
  • Clues: 6 rhyming clues/riddles that students will receive after they complete each of the math challenges. There is an optional 6th clue for a prize once students are done with the mystery, but you can easily eliminate this clue.
  • Optional Prize Card - "You're a Smart Cookie," "Math Is Sweet," and "Your Math Skills are a Treat" prize tag options to go with the 6th clue. You can easily eliminate this part, should you not want to use it or give a prize. I like to give students a cookie, since that's what Macy was baking/her reason for going to the grocery store.
  • Answer Keys - Included for each activity. Students can self assess using the answer keys, or allow you to quickly check student work.

Your students will LOVE solving each of these math tasks to help Macy and YOU will appreciate the data and engagement that comes from this no-prep, differentiated resource!
