Description

My students were having a lot of trouble with understanding all of the ideas that come along with graphing rational functions. So, I created this card sort that students can use to practice. Students are given a mat that contains a chart with 6 functions and columns for vertical asymptotes, holes, horizontal asymptotes, slant asymptotes, x-intercepts, and y-intercepts. They must also match the graphs that go with each function.

Students are given pieces that match to the places in the graph. I suggest laminating the small pieces. You may wish to laminate the mats and graphs as well. All of the pieces must be used, so this helps students organize this topic in their minds and to start to see patterns.

I have also included a quiz that I used with my class that is in a similar format. There is a “word bank” that lists all of the choices for the vertical asymptotes, horizontal asymptotes, slant asymptotes, x-intercepts, and y-intercepts. Students use the choices and then draw the graphs.

My students really enjoyed this activity and said that it was very helpful in helping them understand this concept.

Met expectations
Great value
Good way for the students to practice with Rational Functions and checking on the asymptotes.

Answer choices aren't randomized!

I was planning to have students cut these out themselves, but the pieces are all in order instead of random, so that would basically be giving students an answer key! As a teacher, cutting out all those little pieces myself for dozens of students is a ridiculous use of my time. This is a nice idea but the choices really need to be randomized.

I used this for practice with my pre-calculus class. It has all the features that I wanted them to practice. I didn't want to have to cut apart all of the little pieces, though, so I was going to just give them the list of answers to choose from, but when I went through the activity myself, I discovered that the pieces are all in order rather than being random. So I made a list to give my students with the answer choices scrambled. Great resource, but it would be even better with that modification.

This was a great resource for my students to practice finding key features of rational functions. The only thing I would do differently is to give some extra answer choices or give my students the answer choices after they had worked through all of the problems to ensure they practiced finding each key feature (instead of doing some elimination!)

I did not have a chance to use this resource again this year, but it was really helpful last year in order to helps students understand the difference between the different types of asymptotes and intercepts, which really could have come in handy this year. Good resource, had to make some adjustments for the way I teach things, but very useable.
