Description

Students will learn how to sketch the graph of six trigonometric functions using period, phase shift, vertical shift, vertical stretch, and reflection transformations. Then the students will find the equation of the asymptotes, state the domain, and find the range of the function. Student use their knowledge of transformations to sketch the graph of sine, cosine, tangent, and cotangent functions. Then they will use their knowledge of the reciprocal functions of sine and cosine to aid in the graph secant and cosecant functions. In the last section, student will how to evaluate inverse trigonometric expressions using their knowledge of inverse trigonometric function's graphs and restrictions; right triangle trigonometry; and the unit circle. I have done the lesson planning for you!

Summary of Content:

This Unit Bundle include 4 sections: (1) Graphing Sine and Cosine Functions, (2) Graphing Secant and Cosecant Functions, (3) Graphing Tangent and Cotangent Functions, and (4) Evaluating Inverse Trigonometric Expressions. Each section include the following material:

  • The Guided Notes helps students to determine the key characteristics of the function given the equation and then sketch the graph. The students will also learn how to write the equation of the six trigonometric functions given its graph or evaluating inverse trigonometric functions. Student's handout helps your students stay focus and engaged as you introduce graphing trigonometric functions or evaluating inverse trigonometric functions. You will find the guided notes help students organize lecture content and actively respond to material presented in the lesson.
  • Using the Practice Activity your students will practice finding the key characteristics such as period, amplitude, phase shift, vertical shift, midline, and reflection. They will use this information to sketch two periods of the function and identify its domain and range. Most of the practice activity also includes a couple of questions where the student is given key characteristics of the function and they must find an appropriate trigonometric equation. Although not required, this activity was designed to be completed without the aid of a graphing calculator. I usually assign the first practice activity to my class as either a classwork or a homework assignment. Then I give the second practice activity to any students that need additional practice, re-teaching practice, or as additional practice prior to an assessment.
  • This product includes two Check Point Activities. Check Point Activities can be used in multiple ways depending on the needs of your students. Most of the time I will use them as either exit tickets -- to assess my students learning at the end of the lesson, warm-ups -- to evaluate students learning at the beginning of the next lesson, or topic quizzes -- to obtain a formal assessment of students understanding of the lesson.

Choose trigonometric functions to model periodic phenomena with specified amplitude, frequency, and midline.
Understand that restricting a trigonometric function to a domain on which it is always increasing or always decreasing allows its inverse to be constructed.
Use inverse functions to solve trigonometric equations that arise in modeling contexts; evaluate the solutions using technology, and interpret them in terms of the context.
