These are two Gridbook Math activities are a graphical way to understand/review multiplication and divisibility concepts, factors and multiples and square numbers.
They fit nicely at the beginning of the year, build number sense and pencil and paper graphing skills. They can be used separately, together or as a segue into other, early-in-the-year number sense activities.
'Counting by Squares' introduces multiples of two, five, ten, ....and four; discusses factors and multiples, and discusses how a mathematical activity can be translated into math language. It is a great lead-in to the attached Square Number activity, or into
'Counting by Square Numbers' builds on the same skills, but provides an engaging, graphical way for kids to learn the squares (and their roots) of two through ten, --which can be easily extended.
