Description

This packet contains four different activities, all centered around Groundhog Day. These were created with elementary school students in mind. However, as a secondary teacher, I would use some of these activities in my middle school classroom for students who finish their work early, so this packet is by no means only for elementary school students. If you want to give your students a quick history of Groundhog Day or need some fun activities to fill some time in your day, these activities may be perfect for you!

The activities included are:

· THE HISTORY OF GROUNDHOG DAY & 3-2-1 CHART — This activity give students a quick history of Groundhog Day and includes a 3-2-1 activity for students to expand their learning and think about what they read. The information used to create this all came from the History Channel website. The link can be found below.

· GROUNDHOG DAY WORD SEARCH — This is a simple activity, perfect to use for students who complete their work quickly.

· IF YOU WERE A GROUNDHOG — If your students like to draw, they will enjoy this activity. Students get to be creative and draw themselves as a groundhog and then predict what will happen when the they emerge from their burrow.

· ADD AND COLOR — For this activity, students get to color a picture of a groundhog while also doing math. This activity focuses on adding single digits, so this would be great for younger students or students who might benefit from a little more practice with addition.

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
