Description

Build a strong foundation in growing patterns and additive thinking with this fun and hands-on math center activity!

Your students will love using pattern blocks to recreate and extend colorful growing patterns while developing important number sense and sequencing skills.

Simply print, laminate (optional), and you're ready for a low-prep math center that brings creativity, problem-solving, and conversation into your classroom.

What's Included:

  • 60 Growing Pattern Cards – full of colorful, engaging designs
  • Detailed Instructions – easy setup and teaching tips
  • Recording Worksheet – students can draw or record their extended patterns
  • Organizational Cover Page – keep your set tidy and easy to grab

How It Works:

  1. Students select a card featuring a growing pattern.
  2. They use pattern blocks to recreate and extend the design by adding more stages.
  3. Students describe the pattern rule (e.g., "It grows by adding two more each time").
  4. They can draw their finished pattern or explain their thinking using the recording worksheet.

This activity can be used for:

  • Math Centers and Rotations
  • Guided Math Groups
  • Fast-Finisher Challenges
  • Independent Practice
  • Early Introduction to Algebraic Thinking

Encouraging students to describe patterns in words and numbers helps bridge their understanding of patterns, addition, and early algebra concepts—all while having fun!
