These 60 Place Value Riddles are included in task card format for practicing place value through the thousands place.

The riddles include:

  • Expanded Form
  • Standard Form
  • Word Problems

Example Questions:

  • I am 10 groups of ten. What am I?
  • I am 3,000 more than 1,301. What am I?
  • I am 100 less than 145. What am I?
  • I am 6,000+400+30+2. What am I?

Ideas for use:

  • Students can practice mental problem solving by recording the answers to the riddles
  • In pairs, students can ask each other the riddle questions as a partner activity
  • Daily Math Warm Ups
  • Question of the Day
  • Shelf Work
  • Guided Lesson Activity

For concrete learners, the cards work well with Ten Rods, Counters, Math Cubes, or Montessori Golden Beads and Stamp Game materials.
