Description
My students and I LOVE our word work time during guided reading! These three resources are always a hit.
*Print on card stock and put in plastic sleeves/laminate for repeated use!
Sound Boxes
I use sound boxes to help students build their phonological awareness. They help students learn the difference between the number of phonemes in a word versus the number of letters.
How to use:
1. Pronounce target word slowly
2. Have student repeat word
3. Students count number of phonemes and write the word in the correct boxes (one sound per box)
Analogy Chart
I use the analogy chart during the word study portion of guided reading. It can be used to teach various skills such as vowels patterns, inflectional endings, silent e rule, etc.
How to use:
1. Give students two easy to write at the top of each column (play, rain)
2. Dictate a new unknown word for students to repeat (waist)
3. Student writes one under appropriate column (waist would be written under rain)
4. Continue until both columns are full
Tap and Blend Template
I use the tap and blend template to introduce new words to students during small groups. This practice helps students build phonemic awareness skills
How to use:
1. Write new word on board and slowly pronounce while running my finger underneath
2. Have students write new word on template and practice reading it while tap/blending the word
