Description
Students will be able to practice the skills they learn in EACH lesson by using these centers; there is one center for each lesson! There are color and black-and-white versions of each center, as well as a recording sheet for each center.
I believe the best way to use these centers is to, after the lesson is taught, break students up into groups and allow them to take turns playing the games. If you don't have time for all groups to play it in 1 day, allow them to practice it the next day.
See descriptions of each center below:
Lesson 1 Think Addition to Subtract:
Students match the "asphalt" word problem cards to the "construction worker" equations cards. There are 2 equations per card/problem. Then, students will write the two related equations on the recording sheet.
Lesson 2 Represent Related Facts:
Students will choose a "construction barrel" card and solve all 4 related equations using the number cards. Then, students will write all 4 equations in the correct box on the recording sheet.
Lesson 3 Identify Related Facts:
Students set up the "related facts" and "not related facts" cards, then sort 18 cards based on whether the facts on the cards are related or not. Then, write both equations on the correct side of the recording sheet.
Lesson 4 Use Addition to Check Subtraction:
Students choose a task card and solve the equation. Then, create a new addition equation using related numbers. Write both equations on the recording sheet.
Lesson 5 Use Subtraction to Find an Unknown Addend:
Students will spread out all the cards and choose a “pavement” card first. Look through the cards to find the related “roller machine” card and solve it. Then, write both equations on the recording sheet.
Lesson 6 Solve for the Unknown Addend:
Students will choose a task card. Students will need to look at the addition equation and think of a related subtraction. Next, solve the missing addend equation. Then, write both equations on the recording sheet.
Lesson 7 Develop Fluency in Subtraction:
Students will choose a flash card and solve it. This can be done as partner work or done independently. Be sure that students record the equations on the recording sheet before choosing another card.
