HMH Into Math 1st Grade Module 5 Centers

Description

Students will be able to practice the skills they learn in EACH lesson by using these centers; there is one center for each lesson! There are color and black-and-white versions of each center, as well as a recording sheet for each center.

I believe the best way to use these centers is to, after the lesson is taught, break students up into groups and allow them to take turns playing the games. If you don't have time for all groups to play it in 1 day, allow them to practice it the next day.

See descriptions of each center below:

Lesson 1 Represent Result Unknown Problems with Objects & Drawings:

Students will choose a random astronaut card, read the word problem, and find the rocket ship difference that matches the story. Then, students should think of a complete equation to write on the recording sheet.

Lesson 2 Represent Change Unknown Problems with Objects & Drawings:

Students will choose a random alien card, read the word problem, and find the mothership minuend that matches the story. Then, students should think of a complete equation to write on the recording sheet.

Lesson 3 Represent Start Unknown Problems with Objects & Drawings:

Students will choose a random moon card, read the word problem, and find the sun minuend that matches the story. Then, students should think of a complete equation to write on the recording sheet.

Lesson 4 Solve Add To And Take From Problems:

Students will choose a random word problem card, read the word problem, and find the TWO matching equations for the story. Each
“complete” problem will have 2 equations and 1 story problem. Then, students should write the complete equations on the recording sheet.

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = ▯ - 3, 6 + 6 = ▯.
