Description

Students will be able to practice the skills they learn in EACH lesson by using these centers; there is one center for each lesson! There are color and black-and-white versions of each center, as well as a recording sheet for most centers (as appropriate).

I believe the best way to use these centers is to, after the lesson is taught, break students up into groups and allow them to take turns playing the games. If you don't have time for all groups to play it in 1 day, allow them to practice it the next day.

See descriptions of each center below:

Lesson 1 Represent Total Unknown Problems with Objects and Drawings:

Students will put together a puzzle. They will read each box on the word problem page, then find the matching sum card and place it on top of the word problem. When finished, they should have a complete baseball field picture with players. There is no recording sheet for this lesson.

Lesson 2 Represent Both Addends Unknown Problems with Objects and Drawings:

Students will need dice for this activity. First, roll 2 dice and write the numbers you land on in the roll column. Write them as 2 addends in the add column and solve. Sort based on the sum. Students can work in pairs and each get 4 turns, or independently and have 8 turns. There is no recording sheet for this lesson.

Lesson 3 Represent Addend Unknown Problems with Objects and Drawings:

Students will choose a random baseball glove equation card, read the equation, and find the baseball sum card that matches. Then, students should write the complete equation on the recording sheet.

Lesson 4 Represent Total Unknown Problems with a Visual Model:

Students will choose a random baseball bat word problem card, read it, and find the box model card that matches the story. Then, students should think of a complete equation to write on the recording sheet.

Lesson 5 Represent Addend Unknown and Both Addends Unknown Problems with Objects and Drawings:

Students will choose a random word problem card, read it, and find the matching equation and box model. When all 3 cards match, they will have the correct numbers and the “cut out” pattern will match too. There is no recording sheet for this center.

Lesson 6 Solve Put Together and Take Apart Problems:

Students will choose a random home plate card, read the word problem, and find the baseball sum or difference that matches the story. Then, students should think of a complete equation to write on the recording sheet.

Lesson 7 Solve Addition and Subtraction Problems:

Students will put together another puzzle. First, they will look at each equation on the equations page, find the matching sum or difference (scoreboard picture) card and place it on top of the equation. When finished, they should have a complete scoreboard picture. There is no recording sheet for this lesson.

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = ▯ - 3, 6 + 6 = ▯.
