HMH Into Math 1st Grade Module 7 Centers

Description

Students will be able to practice the skills they learn in EACH lesson by using these centers; there is one center for each lesson! There are color and black-and-white versions of each center, as well as a recording sheet for most centers (as appropriate).

I believe the best way to use these centers is to, after the lesson is taught, break students up into groups and allow them to take turns playing the games. If you don't have time for all groups to play it in 1 day, allow them to practice it the next day.

See descriptions of each center below:

Lesson 1:

Students will choose and read a cow word problem card. They will solve the problem and find the correct feed sack card to match. Students will then write the equation on the recording sheet.

Lesson 2:

Students will choose and read an animal word problem card. They will solve the problem and find the correct barn equation card to match. Students will then write the equation on the recording sheet.

Lesson 3:

Students will choose a word problem card. They will solve and find the equation card to match. If they are correct, the matching card will finish the picture. Students will then write the equation on the recording sheet.

Lesson 4:

Students will choose and read a word problem task card. They will solve the problem and write the equation on the recording sheet.

Lesson 5:

Students will choose and read a word problem card. They will solve the problem by using the bar model card. Students will then write the equation on the recording sheet. Each time they finish one equation, erase the writing on the bar model and reuse for the next equation.

Lesson 6:

Students will read a word problem from the word problem mat. They will solve the problem and find the correct number picture card. Place it on top of the word problem square. Repeat until the picture is created. Students will then write the equation on the recording sheet.

Lesson 7:

Students will choose and read a word problem card. They will solve the problem by using the picture/equation page, just like practiced in the lesson. This will serve as the recording sheet for the lesson 7 center.

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
