Lesson Focus
Lessons 1–4: Build Writing Knowledge and Prepare for the Unit
Students begin by exploring the idea of discovery and thinking about how discoveries can be big or small. They connect to the focal text La Mariposa, discuss symbolism, collect interesting words and phrases, categorize vocabulary, review the writing process, and set goals for the module.
Lessons 5–6: Generate Ideas and Plan
Students brainstorm personal narrative ideas connected to discoveries they have made. Then they use story elements and a story map to plan their personal narrative with characters, setting, conflict, events, and conclusion.
Lessons 7–10: Draft the Personal Narrative
Students draft their narratives step-by-step. They practice crafting a strong lead, developing the middle with narrative structure, using chronological order, adding story elements, using show, don’t tell, and writing a strong satisfying ending.
Lessons 11–13: Revise and Edit
Students revise their drafts by working on dialogue, dialogue punctuation, direct and indirect dialogue, peer feedback, sentence sense, and direct address. Students also participate in structured peer editing to prepare their drafts for publishing.
Lessons 14–15: Publish and Celebrate
Students prepare their final copies by rewriting or typing their drafts, optionally creating covers and illustrations, and sharing their finished personal narratives with classmates.
