Description

Candy Sort Task

Students explore combining like terms when given starbursts and skittles. In order to be like terms they need to be the same color and the same candy. We can't say I have 5 red starbursts and skittles to describe 2 red starbursts and 3 red skittles. This can then be related to the fact that like terms need to be the same variable with the same exponent.

Notes/Practice + FREE PowerPoint

The candy sort task is accompanied by a notes page to give practice for combining like terms in algebraic expressions. This PowerPoint Freebie goes along with the task & notes

Maze

Students practice the concept of combining like terms by completing 14 problems in the maze. This is a great way for students to self-check as they go as well as for the teacher to quickly check at a glance. This could be used in 7th grade after they've learned about combining like terms or even in 8th or 9th grade to review.
