Description
SLPs have some seasonal Halloween fun as you target R-controlled vowels in therapy and send homework articulation/phonology worksheets along with an auditory discrimination exercise, instructions for parents, and engaging Halloween "thumbs up/down" cards for self monitoring practice. This resource offers at least 3 days of activities and 20+ R target words for your elementary aged students in grades kindergarten through 3-4th, or even 5th grade if R articulation problems persist. Use this resource for one-on-one speech therapy and for speech therapy homework as a resource to share with parents and teachers to improve classroom carry-over as well. 3 activities are included, but these can likely be extended for additional days of use.
What’s Included... (5 pages, not including instructions)
- HALLOWEEN R HELPERS "follow the path" worksheet (color)
- HALLOWEEN R HELPERS "follow the path" worksheet/coloring page (black/white)
- Auditory discrimination exercise with instructions for parents/teachers (color and black/white versions)
- 4 Auditory discrimination color visual cue cards ("thumbs up/down")
This activity is appropriate for children ages 5 (It is not too early to establish correct tongue position) through 9 or later elementary grades if “R” problems persist.
Activity Instructions:
The color HALLOWEEN R HELPER worksheet has 20+ R target words (R controlled vowels, plus a few extra co-articulator K, G, and CR blends to facilitate correct “R” placement). Simply print & go for 1:1 therapy! No more fumbling through all those artic/phonology cards! (Suggest having student complete the worksheet by tracing/coloring the path, or by following with their finger while practicing the R words along the way. Students should say the word 3-5x, then make up a sentence using the word for a challenge level if appropriate).
Then use in therapy/also send home the black/white HALLOWEEN R HELPER worksheet for additional practice/coloring at home during carry-over practice. (It’s great to use as a coloring page!).
Also send home for parents the ready made…
- Auditory Discrimination exercise handout with instructions
- Auditory discrimination Halloween visual cue cards
* The auditory discrimination activity instruction handout is included as an additional activity to train self-monitoring skills when the student takes a “teacher turn” and tells his/her homework helper if their “R word is correct/incorrect. Includes visual cue cards showing “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” to
”try again”.
These worksheets are great for…
Parent communication & speech therapy homework education
Convenient print & go therapy
Engaging “speech homework” for skill carry-over
Training listening/auditory discrimination skills for self-monitoring
Other ideas for use…
Use the black and white worksheet version as a COLORING PAGE for target R words
