Description
These hands on multi-step word problems are a big hit in my classroom and create a lot of ah-ha moments when we first start trying to decipher more complex 3rd grade word problems. 2-step word problems can be tricky for third graders and these are perfect practice! Students get practice multiplication and division word problems that may also include addition or subtraction. Aligns with 3.OA.8. There is a printable and digital version included.
If you like this pack, you may also like my Hands On Multiplication and Division One Step Word Problems Pack.
This pack of multi-step word problems was inspired by the difficulties I see in my own third grade classroom when students first are introduced to word problems with more than one operation. They seem to have trouble telling the difference between the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and making something that they can use for hands on practice was my main goal.
This pack of 24 hands on word problems all come with manipulatives you can print out and the students can move around to help them figure out if the operation in each problem is multiplication or division. Some problems involve multiplication then addition, multiplication then subtraction, division then addition, or division then subtraction.
Students can solve the problems on the worksheet, use the manipulatives to help them in their work space, or they can glue the manipulative and the problem on a large poster paper to display it for their peers.
In my own classroom, I gave each table a different multi-step word problem and set of manipulatives. They had to show their work and explain their thinking behind which operation they think their problem represented.
Doing this at the beginning of my multi-step word problem unit really helped my students see the reasoning behind each problem instead of using key words to help them figure out the problems.
PLEASE NOTE: The word problems set only has one step word problems. The multi-step word problems pack has the SAME problems but with 2 steps to solve instead of one. For example, in the word problems set, it has a problem about how many donuts are in 4 dozen. In the multi-step one, it says there are four boxes with a dozen each inside and another box with a half dozen. Students have to do an extra step and add the half dozen. All of the problems are the "same" in both packs but the problem-solving is different for each problem.
