Description

I use this in my Harry Potter 5th Grade Math Unit at the end of the year as a review. We do the unit after spring testing as a fun review of the 5th grade math standards from the year.

This is a "broom race" activity. It gets students up and moving outside.

Additional needed materials that are not included: stopwatch, 4 brooms

Common Core Standards Covered:
CC.5.NBT.7: Divide decimals to hundredths
CC.5.MD.2: Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4,1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots.

Optional Extension:
CC.5.NBT.4: Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
