Description

Hidden Figures is the perfect movie for the end of the year, Black History Month, or a movie afternoon in math class, and this Hidden Figures movie math and viewing guide activity is just right for middle or high school! The worksheets include story-related math questions, a comprehension question viewing guide, and discussion questions, and characterization and growth mindset worksheets.

The resource includes ten movie math questions based on Hidden Figures, which are aligned with the sixth grade curriculum. This makes them appropriate for grades 6-8 and beyond, providing a great spiral back review for older students. Topics include percents, ratios, proportions, rates, and fractions.

Additionally, a 20 question comprehension worksheet is included. This is perfect to give to your students to complete while they are watching the movie. After the movie is over, additional activities include a growth mindset worksheet, where students must identify instances in which characters used a growth vs. fixed mindset, as well as discussion questions and a characterization worksheet.

This activity is totally no-prep, and is great for the celebrating Black History Month, for sub-work while you are out of the classroom, or for a relaxed day. It is a great way for students to enjoy a couple of hours of movie fun, while still practicing their skills. Answer keys are included.

I loved that the math questions are aligned to 6th grade standards but still work beautifully for grades 6–8 as spiral review. The mix of percents, ratios, proportions, rates, and fractions felt purposeful and accessible. The 20-question viewing guide kept students focused during the movie, and the growth mindset and characterization activities led to great discussions afterward.
