"I have used these in small group to review/teach heart words. The visual support helps students know what part of the word they need to focus on learning by heart."

Description

These high-frequency word cards are perfect for supporting your teaching of irregular words. If you want to teach using heart words, these cards are ready to go for you to print and use! In the past, we encouraged students to memorize "sight words." Now through the body of research known as the "Science of Reading" we know that in order for students to learn words, students need to orthographically map those words using phonics knowledge. Because some high-frequency words have tricky parts, we can focus our attention on those parts during our instruction.

This particular set of word cards has been organized to supplement my decodable books. My books are carefully scaffolded, with 0-2 new high-frequency words being added to each one. You can use these word cards to support your teaching using the decodable books. The word cards are numbered to match the book where the word first is introduced. If you don't use my decodable books, you can still use the cards. The numbers are very small on each card.

Some high-frequency words have irregular or tricky parts. Think about the word "of". It sounds like u-v. Both letters in that words are tricky. Now think about the high-frequency word "and." That entire word is decodable! In many other words, like "some," parts of the word make sense with our phonics knowledge and others don't. We can help students efficiently learn their high-frequency words by drawing their attention to the parts of the words that are trickier. My students have had wonderful success by coding the tricky parts with hearts and underlines.

Included:

-85 high-frequency word cards matching the Grade School Snapshots Decodable books

-125 additional high-frequency word cards to expand and support your teaching (to match other decodable books and your curriculum requirements)

-all 210 high-frequency word cards are provided with and without hearts
