Description

This math resource contains ten holiday fraction riddles which provide students practice in recognizing equivalent fractions while at the same time, reducing and identifying fractional parts in lowest terms.

Specific words are provided, and the students are to figure out the correct fractional part of each particular word. (Example: The first 1/3 of LEDGER which would be LE.) If the fractional part is correctly identified, when the students write the fractional parts on the lines provided, a new word is formed. Each group of new words becomes a holiday riddle or an answer to a riddle. These can be completed all at once or divided up and used as a focus activity each day for ten days. Another idea would be to intersperse them throughout the month of December. Answers are included at the end of the resource.

I also offer different riddles for six months in a 33 page bundle at a discounted price:

Explain why a fraction 𝘒/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 Γ— 𝘒)/(𝘯 Γ— 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘒/𝘣 + 𝘀/π˜₯ = (𝘒π˜₯ + 𝘣𝘀)/𝘣π˜₯.)
