Description
Engage your second-grade students in a festive, real-world Project-Based Learning (PBL) experience that brings their math skills to life! This holiday resource challenges students to become expert shoppers, planning and budgeting gifts for their loved ones while practicing essential addition and subtraction with regrouping skills.
Key Learning & Activities:
This project provides a multi-faceted learning experience, integrating math, writing, and logical reasoning:
- Financial Literacy & Budgeting: Each student is given $300 budget to spend on important people in their life (no presents for themselves!).
- Step 1: Budget and Plan: Students must carefully plan who they want to buy for and allocate funds. The initial budget must be approved to ensure their addition and subtraction with regrouping is correct before moving on.
- Creative Expression & Logical Reasoning:
- Step 2: Design and Explain: Students draw the specific gifts they are "giving" and practice logical reasoning by explaining why they chose that gift, taking into account the recipient's preferences.
- Writing Skills Integration: Students utilize writing skills to articulate their choices, clearly explaining why certain important people in their lives would want particular presents.
- Peer Sharing: Once the final "gift guide" is complete, students share their work with a classmate for a fun, communicative final step!
