Description

In this high school biology experiment students will investigate how our bodies maintain homeostasis in the attempt to resist change by both combating stressors and eventually moving into survival mode for the protection of vital organs. Students can complete this lab in the classroom or in a virtual classroom from home. Students will hypothesis on how bodies react to hypothermia, collect data, evaluate evidence, draw conclusions and use research to solidify understanding. 

This activity can be used as a TpT Virtual Activity or printed for in the classroom.

Learning Standards:

Performance Expectation: HS-LS1-3 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes: Plan conduct an investigation to provide evidence that feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis. 

Disciplinary Core Idea: LS1.A: Structure and Function Feedback mechanisms maintain a living system’s internal conditions within certain limits and mediate behaviors, allowing it to remain alive and functional even as external conditions change within some range. Feedback mechanisms can encourage (through positive feedback) or discourage  (negative feedback) what is going on inside the living systems. 

Cross Cutting Concept: Stability and Change: Feedback (negative and positive) can stabilize or destabilize a system. 

Science and Engineering Practice: Plan and conduct an investigation individually and collaboratively to produce data to serve as the basis for evidence, and in the design; decide on types, how much, and accuracy of data needed to produce reliable measurements and consider limitations on the precision of the data(e.g. Number of trials, cost, risk, time), and refine the design accordingly. 

Learning Objectives: 

Students will be able to…

  • Investigate how our bodies maintain homeostasis 
  • Utilize data to defend a claim on how our bodies work in survival mode.

First of all let me just say that I love how this shop is so well aligned with standards. This lesson in particular was really successful with my class. The activity was really convenient for students to do via remote learning AND it is going to carry over nicely when we return in person soon.

Examples of investigations could include heart rate response to exercise, stomate response to moisture and temperature, and root development in response to water levels. Assessment does not include the cellular processes involved in the feedback mechanism.
