Description

This is a fun lab to experiment with speed! Supplies needed per group include: make-shift ramp, masking tape, 3 stop watches, meter-stick, hot wheels car and this lab sheet. Students will mark of one, two and three meters with the tape. Three students with stop-watches will stand at each of those meters. Groups will count down and as another student releases their car down the ramp, all stop watches should start their time simultaneously with the release of the car. Each student will stop their timer as the car passes their piece of tape. Students will collect data, graph it, and calculate their average speed using S=D/T.

I used this to review distance time graphs with my students. The activity itself was a little tricky for my students, but it was a great way to review how to fill in distance time graphs and calculate speed.

We used this as a Force and Motion lab to end our unit. It was a great way to reinforce Speed=Distance /time and review of what we have done in class. I do wish there was work space available for the kids to use and the line plot would have printed darker/better. Overall I will use this again and add my own little tweaks.

Great way to introduce the topic of speed to my students! I used books for a ramp, hot wheel straight track pieces from the dollar tree as my track, painters' tape to mark the distances, and of course hot wheels.
