Description

This completely digital product includes a PowerPoint presentation, accompanying illustrated student guided notes, and two pages of review worksheets, and will provide students with a thorough introduction to the Human Circulatory System! The 30-slide PowerPoint includes the following topics (in this order):

1. Introduction: Purpose of the Circulatory System

2. The Structure of the Heart: Chambers, Valves, Septum, Vena Cava, Aorta

3. Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries:

4. Pathway of Blood Flow through the Heart: Pulmonary and Systemic Circulation

5. Components of Blood: Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets, Plasma

6. Circulatory Disorders: Atherosclerosis, Hypertension, Angina Pectoris, Heart Attack

These notes are highly interactive! Students will fill in the blanks and label a full diagram of the structure of the heart as the content is presented. Helpful images and diagrams from the PowerPoint are also embedded within the guided notes to assist student understanding.  The presentation begins with a “Fact or Fiction?” guessing game to engage students in the lesson. The level of detail is appropriate for a middle school biology or high school general biology course, but perhaps not sophisticated enough for an Advanced Placement course.

The review worksheets pair directly with the PowerPoint, and can be used as a homework assignment, or even a quiz!

I used this slideshow and fill-in notes for my students learning of the circulatory system. The resource is good, with pictures diagrams and my students find it engaging. There are some typos in the slideshow. "Respiratory System" is referenced instead of "Circulatory System on slide 5; and pulmonary artery and vein are mislabled/switched on the "Label the heart" slide.

NGSSMS-LS1-3
Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. Emphasis is on the conceptual understanding that cells form tissues and tissues form organs specialized for particular body functions. Examples could include the interaction of subsystems within a system and the normal functioning of those systems. Assessment does not include the mechanism of one body system independent of others. Assessment is limited to the circulatory, excretory, digestive, respiratory, muscular, and nervous systems.
NGSSHS-LS1-2
Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms. Emphasis is on functions at the organism system level such as nutrient uptake, water delivery, and organism movement in response to neural stimuli. An example of an interacting system could be an artery depending on the proper function of elastic tissue and smooth muscle to regulate and deliver the proper amount of blood within the circulatory system. Assessment does not include interactions and functions at the molecular or chemical reaction level.
