Human Rights Unit Plans & Activities

This is a unit I have designed (and have recently taught) for the new International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) Humanities guide based on 'Human Rights'.

I currently teach this unit to Year 4 (or grade 9); however, it could be taught in any grade 8 or 9 social studies/civics classroom or within another year of the MYP Humanities programme with little modification. 83 pages in total.

Included in addition to unit plans:

*** a variety and range of resources - readings, copies of UDHR, student-friendly version of UDHR, two videos based on UDHR, History of Human Rights PowerPoint

*** class activities and assessment tasks with rubrics - History of Human Rights - UDHR Student Presentation Activity - UDHR Top Ten Task! - Human Rights Exam - Human Rights Violation Analysis and Infographic

*** samples of student work - history of human rights presentation, infographic assignment and analysis (7 samples)

I used this with my 7th and 8th-grade students in a lesson to make them aware of the differences in the treatment of people worldwide. We live in a small Midwestern town where everyone knows everyone and there is no crime rate to be mentioned.

Useful resource that could be tailored to plan a series of lessons and assessments.

The overall lesson/unit plan was confusing and was unsure how it tied to the various documents within the folders. Would have been helpful to have one document with all directions that followed the unit plan. Not sure I would use this again next year with my next class. Not happy with this resource and I even tried to email the creator with no response.
