Description

If we want students to understand something, we have to teach it! These 6-8 short, hands-on lessons will help you explicitly teach what it means to be PRINCIPLED, and set up opportunities for your students to take Action by being Upstanders (rather than Bystanders).

Concepts:

  • Honesty and integrity
  • Fairness and justice
  • Respect for dignity and rights
  • Taking responsibility for actions and consequences

The presentation is ready to use as-is with no further resources needed (other than some paper, some post-it notes, a piece of string, and a coin). A document including the letters to create a class 'Upstander' display is included for FREE.

The Google Slideshow can be used for in-person or online learning, or downloaded as a PowerPoint. This Principled presentation has enough content for 8-10 lessons that you can use flexibly in your class, either as a mini-unit, or throughout the year.

These fun and varied lessons would work well in Elementary classes during morning meeting time, and in Middle School during Homeroom or Advisory lessons.

As IB PYP and MYP teachers, we are often expected to have our students understand the IB Learner Profile attributes, but we are given very little guidance about how to actually teach these concepts - that's why I have made this Learner Profile PRINCIPLED mini-unit.

It is a complete student-centered resource which will help your students really understand what it means to be Principled, and begin to apply it in their lives. It does all this without any worksheets - modelling and introducing you and your students to a variety of strategies for authentic teaching and learning.

Features:

  • Material for 6-8 short lessons (perfect for PYP Morning Meeting time or MYP homeroom sessions).
  • Flexible - Choose which lessons work for your students (make the unit as long or as short as you like). Teach as a distinct mini-unit, or spread throughout the year.
  • A beautiful picture book to introduce being Principled (with YouTube read-aloud link if you don't have the actual book available)
  • Official IB definition of Principled, along with child-friendly definition
  • Visible Thinking Routines from Harvard Project Zero
  • FREE letters for a class 'Upstander' Display
  • Active movement activities
  • Fun games and literature-based activities
  • Creative, Hands-On, Meaningful, Authentic learning engagements
  • Broad view of Principled - honesty and integrity, fairness and justice, respect for dignity and rights, taking responsibility for actions and consequences.
  • Links to relevant Principled music videos
  • Teacher notes and suggestions
  • Suggestions for student Action
  • Varied, open-ended learning engagements - suitable for all age levels, and EAL / ELL / ESL learners. NO WORKSHEETS!
  • Pre-Assessment and Reflection opportunities
  • Modelling of Inquiry-Based learning strategies you can use year-round

Don't recreate the wheel or be left in the dark about how to teach this concept. This Google Slideshow has all you need!

Fantastic for any time of year, but especially during those first few Back to School weeks when you are creating your classroom community and expectations.

Hi there, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. I am really glad you found this useful. I've now made 7 Learner Profile mini-units - so I've got 3 to go! There is certainly a lot of content to cover once you get started on the journey. Thanks again!
