Description
This Google Slides Mini-Unit has 5-6 short, hands-on lessons you can choose from, so you'll be ready to explicitly teach what it means to be a Risk-Taker or Courageous, as well as encourage students to support each other in class to make it easier for others to take a risk. If we want students to understand the IB Learner Profile, we have to teach it!
The presentation is ready to use as-is with no further resources needed (other than some blank paper and post-it notes).
The Google Slideshow can be used for in-person or online learning, or downloaded as a PowerPoint. This Risk-Taker presentation has enough content for 8-10 lessons that you can use flexibly in your class, either as a mini-unit, or throughout the year.
These fun and varied lessons would work well in PYP classes during morning meeting time, and in MYP during Homeroom or Advisory lessons.
As IB PYP and MYP teachers, we are often expected to have our students understand the IB Learner Profile attributes, but we are given very little guidance about how to actually teach these concepts - that's why I have made this Risk-Taker mini-unit.
It is a complete student-centered resource which will set your students up to be confident, courageous Risk-Takers who aren't afraid to try new things or keep trying when things are hard for them. It also teaches PYP and MYP students about how to support their classmates and make it easy for each other to take a risk.
Features:
- Material for 5-6 short lessons (perfect for PYP Morning Meeting time or MYP homeroom sessions)
- A fun read-aloud picture book to introduce being a RiskTaker (with YouTube link if you don't have the actual book available)
- Official IB definition of RiskTaker, along with child-friendly definition
- Discussion prompts
- Visible Thinking Routines from Harvard Project Zero
- Active movement activities such as the Human Continuum
- Creative, Hands-On Literacy and Art activities
- Bulletin board display ideas
- Links to relevant music videos
- Authentic use of data handling methods (T-charts and continuums)
- Teacher notes and suggestions
- Varied, open-ended learning engagements - suitable for all levels, including EAL / ELL / ESL learners.
- Pre-Assessment and Reflection opportunities
Don't recreate the wheel or be left in the dark about how to teach this concept. This Google Slideshow has all you need!
Fantastic for any time of year, but especially during those first few Back to School weeks when you are creating your classroom community.
