Description
In this lesson, students, analyzing primary sources, including excerpts and quotes, will examine the growing division within the nation regarding the issue of westward expansion. Despite opposition from intellectuals, clergymen, and politicians, expansion was inevitable, only increasing tension between northern and southern states. To begin this topic, an activity was designed in order to enhance the students’ knowledge of American expansion westward since the Jefferson administration and how it caused further tensions within the Union. (Note to teachers: I used American Pageant to supplement Farmer’s textbook concerning American westward expansion.) There is a Teacher Answer Key at the end of the lesson.
