Addition vs. Subtraction Lesson Packet & Assessment

For each problem in this lesson, students are asked to:

  • Draw a model & use it to determine the operation
  • Estimate the answer
  • Solve
  • Answer in a complete sentence

We know that choosing the operation for word problems is one of the hardest things to master in fourth grade. So why throw all 4 operations at kids all at once? Better to focus on two operations at a time so kids can focus on the subtle differences between the two. In this lesson students explore the difference between multiplication (repeated groups of the same amount) and division (splitting a group into smaller equal groups). What do words like "each, every, and per" tell me? How can I tell if I'm given the total or trying to find the total? How can a model help me choose my operation?
