Description

This bundle includes three engaging activity sets to take you from start to finish in teaching your students what setting is and how to identify it in a meaningful context.

The activity sets included are. . .

  1. Setting Discovery Learning Activity
  2. Identifying Setting Lesson Set
  3. Identifying Setting Graphic Organizers

More information. . .

  • Kick off your unit with a discovery learning activity to get students interested in the unit, activate their background knowledge, and guide them to construct a basic understanding of the concept on their own.
    • Throughout this activity, students think critically about the impact setting has on a story and why it's important. Students first get story scenarios, then think about how a different setting would change that story. Then, they answer discussion questions about all the scenarios. As a bonus activity, students can partner up and each write the same story in two different settings, then compare and contrast how they turned out.

  • After students construct their own knowledge, clarify and solidify their understanding with a direct instruction lesson set.
    • The lesson set starts with a presentation about what setting is and how to identify it. The presentation also has doodle notes for students to follow along. Then, there's a scaffolded practice packet where students identify setting and have a color-coded handout to guide them. Finally, there's a quiz where students answer knowledge-level questions directly from the slides/notes, then determine setting for two passages on their own.

  • After your students have the information, let them practice their skills individually or in small groups with a set of differentiated graphic organizers.
    • You can use these graphic organizers with ANY text to guide students through the thinking process of identifying each element. This set has 4 graphic organizers to allow you to differentiate for all your students’ current levels of understanding. This is a perfect small group instruction activity or independent formative assessment.
