Identifying and Expressively Labeling Problems & Emergencies – Target Cards (56 Situations)

This teaching resource is designed to help learners identify and expressively state what the problem or emergency is when presented with visual situations. The set includes 56 illustrated target cards, each depicting a common problem or emergency scenario that may occur at home, school, or in the community (e.g., someone is hurt, a fire, spilled drink, broken item, someone crying, illness, unsafe situations).

Learners are taught to visually analyze each situation and respond to questions such as:

  • “What is the problem?”
  • “What’s wrong?”
  • “What is happening?”

This target supports the development of functional communication, problem awareness, and safety skills, while increasing expressive language related to real-life situations. Teaching can be implemented in structured 1:1 instruction, small groups, social skills sessions, or safety instruction programs.

Instruction may include errorless teaching, prompting and prompt fading, modeling, and differential reinforcement to promote independent responding. Responses can be targeted vocally, with AAC, sign language, or picture-based responses depending on the learner’s communication modality.

Alignment with ABLLS-R (Task G30 – Identifies Problems or Emergencies)

This resource directly aligns with ABLLS-R Task G30, which assesses a learner’s ability to identify and label problems or emergencies depicted in pictures or occurring in real-life situations. The target cards provide repeated practice opportunities to:

  • Identify a problem or emergency shown in a visual scenario
  • Expressively label what is wrong or unsafe
  • Demonstrate understanding of socially and functionally relevant situations
  • Increase generalization across a wide variety of problem types and settings

By including 56 varied problem scenarios, this resource allows for systematic assessment, skill acquisition, and progress monitoring consistent with ABLLS-R expectations.
