Description

Idioms are a lot of fun to teach and learn. The problem, especially for English language learners, is there are so many idioms to master! Idiom Feud PowerPoint Game is a fun whole class game for students who already have some understanding/familiarity with idioms. The game play has similarities with the popular game show Family Feud. The only preparation for you to do is printing the last slide, the answer key. Once you've done that, simply split your class into teams, push the present button (game must be in present mode to work), and have fun practicing idioms.

This particular download has two versions of the game (both files in the zip folder are PowerPoint, the game will NOT work properly in Google Slides). Both versions have the same rounds and answers, but the Category Choice version allows you to avoid the face off. Full directions for each version are as follows:

Idiom Feud

This game has similarities to Family Feud in its play and scoring. You will need to print out the round answer keys (last slides) before class so you know where to click. Score will have to be kept separately, either on a sheet of paper or whiteboard.

Play:

1.Divide the class into two teams.

2.Call one player from each team to the front and have them face one another. Explain how students will indicate that they have an answer. Some possibilities include having them slap a bell, hit a buzzer, raise a hand, etc. Read the category and the first student to indicate gets to answer.

3.If the answer is on the board, reveal it by clicking on the cover. That student’s team gets to play the round. If the answer is not on the board, the other team gets the chance to steal by giving an answer that is on the board. If neither answer is on the board, the first student’s team gives a second answer. Turns continue back and forth until one team gives an answer that is on the board, winning the chance to play the round.

4.The winning team then gives answers, one at a time. If the answers are on the board, the teacher reveals them by clicking on the cover. Each answer is worth the number of points indicated on the slide, the order in which they appear does not matter. A student who gives a correct answer can earn 20 bonus points for his/her team by stating what the idiom means.

5.For each answer given that is not on the board, the teacher clicks the Strike buttons (1, 2, 3). The button will disappear and a red X will appear in its place.

6.If all of the answers are revealed before a team gets three strikes, that team earns all of the points for that round.

7.If a team earns three strikes before revealing all of the answers, the opposing team gets the opportunity to steal. They huddle and choose one answer. If the answer is on the board, that team steals all of the points earned thus far in that round and the remaining answers are revealed.

8.To move to the next round, click “Next Round.” Another set of players is called to the front and a new round begins (return to step 3). The final round is indicated by the “End Game” button.

Idiom Category Choice Feud

This game has similarities to Family Feud in its play and scoring. You will need to print out the round answer keys (last slides) before class so you know where to click. Score will have to be kept separately, either on a sheet of paper or whiteboard.

Play:

1.Divide the class into two teams.

2.The first team chooses a category from the board.

3.The team then gives answers, one at a time. If the answers are on the board, the teacher reveals them by clicking on the cover. Each answer is worth the number of points indicated on the slide, the order in which they appear does not matter. A student who gives a correct answer can earn 20 bonus points for his/her team by stating what the idiom means. For each answer given that is not on the board, the teacher clicks the Strike buttons. The button will disappear and a red X will appear in its place.

4.If all of the answers are revealed before a team gets three strikes, that team earns all of the points for that round.

5.If a team earns three strikes before revealing all of the answers, the opposing team gets the opportunity to steal. They huddle and choose one answer. If the answer is on the board, that team steals all of the points earned thus far in that round and the remaining answers are revealed.

6.Click the “Category Board” button to return to the categories slide. Team two then takes a turn choosing a category and getting to play.

7.Once all of the categories have been played (the Category Board is empty), the team with the most points wins.

Please note: due to animation triggers, this game will not work in Google Slides.
