Description

Need a colorful, engaging way to introduce the characteristics of igneous rocks? A Google slideshow will lead your class through filling in guided notes about the characteristics of igneous rocks. Students will write down key points as they follow along. The words needed to fill in the blanks on the notes page directly match what appears on the slideshow.

CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) practice: Students will get to practice applying what they learned about igneous rocks and their characteristics. 5 different igneous rocks are presented to students on the slideshow and on their worksheet. Students make a claim as to which type of igneous rock (intrusive or extrusive) they believe it is, support their claim with evidence through observations, and then provide reasoning for their claims.

Exit Ticket: Check for understanding with the included exit ticket. A quick half-sheet informal assessment. Students will extend what they have learned about igneous rock characteristics.

Here’s What You’ll Get

  • 1 page guided notes
  • 1 practice page to allow students to apply their knowledge using CER
  • 6 Google slides that will lead them through the ENTIRE lesson
  • 1 exit ticket to expand on thinking
  • 1 teacher answer key

Great for absent students: just share the slideshow and provide a copy of the worksheet…let them catch up on their own. Then, the practice page will allow you to assess their understanding as the answers are NOT given to students.

This works great for differentiation and your visual learners. Students know exactly what info and where to write it down. This helps students stay organized and have information to study and review throughout your rocks unit.

Key Concepts

Igneous rocks are a result of cooled magma/lava and often found near volcanos. The two types include intrusive and extrusive. Each type has unique characteristics as a result of where they are cooled. Intrusive rocks are cooled slowly underground and have large crystals and coarse-grained. They often look specked and even colorful. Examples include granite and gabbro. Extrusive rocks are cooled quickly above the Earth’s surface. They often appear glassy or full of holes. They have small crystals and are fine-grained.
