Description

This activity is designed to provide your AP Calculus students with practice solving questions forced on finding the derivative of implicit functions using implicit differentiation. To complete all the task cards the students must know basic differentiation rules, product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, and implicit differentiation.

  • Level A problems will required student to know how to find the derivative of polynomial, rational functions and conic equations.
  • Level B problems will require students to be familiar with find the derivative of conic equations, exponentials, logarithms, and trigonometric functions.

The bell ringer question are divided into three categories:

  • Skill Building Practice - The problems reflect the skills or objective highlighted in this packet. It should take the students less than 5 minutes to complete each skill building problem.
  • Short-response Practice - These problems require short explanation or numerical responses to show that the student knows the answer, and can explain and/or show evidence of how he go it. A small number of steps are required to solve each problem. Students will take between 5 to 10 minutes to complete each short-response problem.
  • Extended-response Practice - These problems take care and careful thought. These problems are designed to measure the student's ability to integrate knowledge across multiple standards. To completely solve each problem, students are required to show multiple steps and/or show evidence of how she got the answer. Students will take between 15 to 25 minutes to complete each extended response problem.

In my class, I will use the skill building questions as bell ringer activities at the beginning of a lesson to focus the students attention on math and/or to review previous materials. I use the short response question as either a closing activity or as review on AP Calculus Test review days. The extended response cards are used on "Free-Response Fridays" or class days I have set assign to practice solving free response questions as my class prepares for the AP calculus exam.
