Description

This engaging activity puts a fun spin on learning informational text structures! The worksheets feature twenty nonfiction passages: five passages related to butterflies, five passages related to bacteria, five passages related to basketball, and five passages related to apples.

Students read the 20 passages and determine the informational text structure of each passage:

→ Sequence

→ Compare and Contrast

→ Cause and Effect

→ Problem and Solution

→ Description

This resource includes three formats to choose from: a traditional worksheet format, a craftivity format, and a digital format that is compatible with TPT Easel. Each is briefly described below.

FOUR TRADITIONAL WORKSHEETS:

Each worksheet contains five passages. Students read each passage and identify its text structure. They write the appropriate code in the notepad graphic that appears on the right side of each passage. (For example, if the passage has a problem & solution structure, students will write "PS" in the notepad.)

PRINTABLE CRAFTIVITY:

I split this activity into two days.

  • Day 1- Distribute the five worksheets to your students. Each worksheet contains four short reading passages. Students read the 20 passages and determine the informational text structure of each passage.
  • Day 2- Students assemble the clipboard display. They color the clipboards, cut out the clipboards and passages, and glue them to construction paper. This resource includes detailed instructions (with photos) for your students to follow. It also includes a teacher instruction page.

TPT DIGITAL EASEL VERSION:

This is a paperless version that can be completed on a device. Each slide contains one reading passage written on a chalkboard and five graphic organizers that represent each text structure. Students read the passage and move the appropriate graphic organizer to the open area at the bottom of the chalkboard.

Here's what teachers like you had to say about using this resource with their students:

  • Hope said, "By far one of my favorite products from you! So on target... students see it right away! EXCELLENT organization and choice of topics! LOVE it!"

  • Gloria G. said, "These passages were perfect for teaching students about text structure. Since the product comes with 4 different passages I used one set for whole group instruction, one set for small group practice, one set for independent practice and the last set as an assessment."

  • BA said, "Absolutely love! No joke, these helped my students SO much!"

  • Heather K. said, "These were great passages. I did not do the "craft" part of this, I just used the passages as a whole group/small group discussion. We highlighted evidence to find the type of text structure. Passages were interesting reads for the students!"

  • Christina K. said, "This was a great way to practice text structure. My 4th graders really enjoyed comparing the texts written in the different structures."
