Description
Looking for an engaging phonics and alphabet activity to help your students practice hearing the beginning sounds of a word and letter recognition? This spider and spider web matching activity is just what you need! These task cards provide a hands-on approach to help develop important reading skills and are perfect for small group instruction or as an addition to your literacy center activities.
Your learners will look at the picture on the spider card say the word, listen for the initial sound that the word makes, and then match it to the correct lowercase letter spider web card. You decide how many letters they use based on their skills and/or the letters you are focusing on.
Other uses for the Spider initial sound and alphabet matching cards include:
- Find the letter: lay out a selection of alphabet base cards and ask students to find the letter that makes the ___ sound. This helps with sound-to-letter correspondence.
- Find the sound: lay out a selection of picture cards with sounds your students are familiar with. Ask students to find the picture that starts with ___ sound. You could also focus on end sounds or vowel sounds depending on the pictures.
- Flashcards: with the alphabet cards – show students a selection of cards (based on what you have been working on) and have them say the sound the letter makes (or the name of the letter if that is your focus).
Just print, laminate, and cut and you are set to go.
I store these In the larger photo display boxes as it makes storage and packing up so easy, but you can just as easily store them in a Ziplock bag.
Because letter & letter-sound recognition is such an important part of the reading process, I like to provide my students with lots of opportunities to interact and solidify their knowledge. I find that just swapping out the theme of the activity helps to keep my students engaged in the task.
I have more themes in this range for practicing hearing initial sounds and matching to the correct alphabet letter and upper-to-lowercase alphabet matching which can be found by clicking HERE
