Engage students in the writing process through this compelling and carefully crafted Insect Research Packet! Covers 1st and 2nd grade Informative Writing Common Core Standards while emphasizing the quality of revision. Takes students step-by-step through the writing process! When tackling the informational writing process, young scientists need a compelling topic to drive their learning. Insects are captivating , easily accessible to students, and down-right fascinating creatures to study!

What is included in the research packet?

This Insect Research Packet includes 99 pages of insect research, pre-writing, organizing, drafting, revising, and assessing materials. Parents and administrators will love to see the habits of revision being developed in your young scientists as they work their way through this research packet. Students are invited to take ownership of their learning by self-assessing, setting goals, revising, and citing their sources.

How can I use it in the classroom?

Students will work together in cooperative learning groups to research their insect and be individually accountable for an informative paragraph and illustration of their insect's classification, life-cycle, diet, physical adaptations, behaviors, habitat, or predators. Their final paragraphs and illustrations can be used in the creation of whole-class final products such as class insect books, scientific journals, field guides, etc.

What Common Core is covered?

Covers 1st and 2nd Grade Common Core English Language Arts Informative Writing skills in which students introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. Also covers Common Core participation in shared research and writing projects and Common Core Standards that require 1st and 2nd graders to respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing by revising and editing.

What do I need to provide?

Students will need access to informational insect texts, magazines, and/or kid-friendly websites for their research.
