Description
Included in this Lesson #3
- Print and Go Substitute Plans
- Class Discussion (2 days)
- Error Analysis
- Deeper Thinking (DOK 2-3)
- Group Activity
- Partner Practice - Self Checking!
Help your students strengthen their integer addition skills with this bundle. This bundle is centered around two critical thinking questions. How do I know the sign of the sum? How will I calculate the sum?
Print and go sub plans make this resource extra valuable and lead the substitute through administering each of these resources. An answer key is included for each page so that the teacher or substitute knows exactly what the students are expected to produce.
Begin with the class discussion which asks very deep questions to help students further their understanding of the rules of adding integers. Continue the class discussion with the Error Analysis which requires students to analyze some very common mistakes such as using the rules for multiplication when trying to add. On the next day give students the Class Discussion for Day 2 and follow it with the Deeper Thinking Questions which are targeted at the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels 2-3. The Error Analysis and Deeper Thinking support the high learners!
The Group Activity gives students the opportunity to talk about their thinking as they are focused on how they calculate the sum and how they find the sign of the sum. This activity is patterned after the One Stray from Kagen. Students answer questions about finding their sum with their group and then they create new groups to share their understanding with. Ultimately they come back to their original group and collectively record their understanding of finding a sum. This activity can easily be extended by asking the groups to create an anchor chart with information on how to find a sum.
The final activity is a partner practice where each problem done by partner A should match the sum of partner B even though the partners are doing two separate problems. This is an easy way for students to work independently from the teacher while still ensuring that their answers are correct. Students LOVE the fact that they each only do half of the problems!
