Description

This digital escape room bundle includes three operations with integers & rational numbers activities. Focusing on 7th grade math standards, students will add, subtract, multiply & divide negative and positive numbers to solve engaging puzzles while practicing and reviewing math skills. Escape rooms are a great way to encourage collaboration and active learning. The engaging storylines will draw students in as they add & subtract integers (and simple rational numbers) to save the submarine, multiply & divide with negative numbers to save a secret agent, and perform all four operations with integers to escape a haunted house - perfect to use for Halloween or any time!

These integer operations activities are no-prep, self-checking, and easy to implement. They are completely automated by a Google Form™. These activities can be completed by anyone with an internet-connected browser, no Google™ accounts required! There is the option to create your own copy of the form for schools that require Google Forms™ to originate from within their system. *Please make sure that your school district does not block Google Forms™. There are supplemental printable pages to help students work out some of the puzzles, but these escape rooms are designed to be completed online.

Math skills required to Escape the Haunted House:

  • Multiply and divide integers
  • Add & subtract integers
  • Solve real world word problems involving operations with integers
  • Understand the rules for multiplication and division of signed numbers
  • Understand the rules for adding and subtracting negative numbers
  • Follow order of operations (no exponents)

Math skills required to Extract the Secret Agent:

  • Multiply and divide integers
  • Understand the rules for multiplication and division of signed numbers
  • Solve puzzles to determine whether a number is positive or negative an a multiplication or division problem
  • Multiply multiple digit signed numbers
  • Use long division with integers

Math skills required to Save the Submarine from Sabotage

  • Add and subtract integers and rational numbers including basic fractions, and decimals
  • Calculate the distance between a positive and a negative number (one method would be to find the absolute value of their differences)
  • Use a number line to aid in addition and subtraction of positive and negative rational numbers
  • Solve word problems involving adding and subtracting positive and negative rational numbers
  • Match equivalent expressions to demonstrate understanding of subtraction as adding the additive inverse and other addition and subtraction rules that apply to negative numbers

What's included in the PDFs?

  • Quickstart guide with link to escape room
  • Optional link for Google Drive™ users to create a copy of the form to save to their own drives in order to view student results.
  • Supplemental printable pages for students to work out the puzzles (please view the preview for each product to learn more).
  • Detailed answer key & teacher tips
  • Success signs to snap photos with after completing the activity (optional)

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Most students will be able to complete these activities in 30-45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will only save data if students are signed into Google accounts, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the puzzles very quickly (20-30 minutes), others will take longer.
  • Can this be used for remote learning? Yes! This product is designed to be able to be completed completely online and can be done in-person, for distance learning, or hybrid models. Students will need a device and internet connection.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Standards

Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
Understand 𝘱 + 𝘲 as the number located a distance |𝘲| from 𝘱, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether 𝘲 is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, 𝘱 – 𝘲 = 𝘱 + (–𝘲). Show that the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply this principle in real-world contexts.
