Description

You found it! This game is exactly what you need to introduce integers basics and operations with integers using a context that will make sense to your students and keep them begging to play more.

This game is hands down the best context I have ever found to introduce integers in a way that helps my students understand as we start to look at rules for integer operations….plus my kids LOVE this game and BEG to play! Teams draw a card from the deck that has an event and an integer value (for example, you volunteered at the food pantry, +10 OR you forgot your homework, -5). Teams calculate their new score based on the card drawn.

Each turn in the game will help your students build number sense as they gain and lose points. The special cards in the game introduce other rules in an understandable way. These cards include “Opposite Day–what’s good is bad, what’s bad is good”; “It was just a bad dream” that allows a team to get rid of a previous event (making sense of turning subtracting a negative into a positive); and multiplier cards.

My class begins to play this game a couple of weeks before we start our integers unit.  We start class off by having each team draw a card and update their score. We normally play the game for several weeks. You could also devote a couple of class days to playing the game all at once.

Here is what you will get:
over 450 cards for gameplay
⚡blank, editable cards so you can add your own events
⚡a Google Sheets scorecard
⚡a Google Forms activity that could be used as an assessment, assignment, pretest, or exit ticket
⚡Teacher’s guide with directions and ideas for use

Once you play this game with your class, you will find yourself referencing it all throughout your integers unit.  “Remember, this is just like the bad dream card” when a student is struggling to subtract a negative. Or “What happens if you get a multiplier and a negative 5 card?” when a student forgets the rules for multiplying. Plus the kids love it, laughing and smiling at their fate each day.
