Description
In this winter-themed STEM challenge, students uses simple machines to design a system to get a snowman's head to its body.
This activity challenges students to call on most of the Standards of Mathematical Practices, as well as to write clearly for a specific purpose. It reinforces the idea of things - and people - working together, and introduces the Rube Goldberg Machine, which takes this idea to a humorous extreme.
Here's a peek at what this resource includes:
- Book List - both fiction and nonfiction titles related to this challenge
- Article - a close reading passage about Rube Goldberg Machines (referencing simple machines) to support building background knowledge for this STEM challenge
- Text-Dependent Questions and Answer Keys to support close reading and comprehension of the article
- Vocabulary - list of relevant vocabulary, as well as larger version of words that can be printed to post on Word Wall
- Student Planner - a graphic organizer to support the Engineering/Design Process
- Lab Sheet - a recording sheet that can be used as is or included in a lab notebook
- Poster - challenge expectations
- Teacher notes
This session is aligned with 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Common Core Standards. However, the standards and concepts addressed are universal, making this resource appropriate for your students even if your school does not use Common Core.
