This unit opener contains suggested talking points when beginning your discussion of decimal numbers. This resource is interactive and fun for students. The lessons included are only suggestions and are not intended to be followed directly, but you could if you wanted to.

These lessons activate student schema by drawing connections between decimal numbers, money, and fractions. The focus of this resource is decimal place value: reading decimal numbers, understanding place value, comparing decimals, and writing decimals in word form.

This unit opener paves the way for later instruction on addition and subtraction of decimal numbers by using play money in a similar manner as base ten blocks are used to add and subtract whole numbers.

One dollar bills represent the ones place.
Dimes represent the tens place.
Pennies represent the hundreds place.
