Description

This excel file and doc allow your students to play with initial position, velocity and acceleration and see how they affect the shape of position vs time graphs and velocity vs time graphs. Can be used as a hook or reinforcement on basic motion. I personally used this after teaching position vs time graphs for constant velocity, but used it as an intro to acceleration, as well as velocity vs time graphs. The great thing about this is that students who are struggling with the concepts can still play around with the numbers to get the answer, and then you can review at the end. There are 6 different scenarios with increasing difficulty, and reference things learned in the previous problems.

For students who are done early I try to get them to make the following shapes: nike swoosh, Smile(hyperbola), frown(hyperbola), and C(impossible). Then I ask them why the C is impossible.

I would highly recommend posting this in google classroom so each student gets a copy of each document. I had students work in pairs. Here are the directions I give students on google classroom:

Use the attached google sheets to observe what happens to the graph's shape when you change the initial position, velocity and acceleration(In the red boxes). Play around with it for a bit and then complete the attached google document.
